Preschool Dance Initiative

My goal is for all preschools to have access to dance programming. Not only is dance a great energy release for children, but dance and movement is how children at the preschool age learn. I want to provide schools with a dance program to benefit the education of the children. Dance can do so much for a person, and it is my mission to have dance offered in all preschools. To me, dance and preschool education should go hand in hand.

This dance program, that I have created, is specifically designed with preschool development in mind. The program will be customized to each school’s philosophy. I will commit to work with classroom teachers to enhance each student’s learning experience and to be sure the program is as effective as possible. Each dance lesson will focus on what the students are working on in their regular classroom. For example, if the classroom focus is on weather, their dance lesson will include ideas on weather. This will provide students with the opportunity to physically interact with the concepts they are learning.

Not only will the dance lessons focus on the classroom experiences, but each dance lesson will increase the students’ understanding of turn taking, listening, cooperation, musicality, rhythm, dance basics, and body control. Dance promotes fitness, emotional expression, language (verbal and nonverbal), self- confidence, focus, and self-discipline. Students will walk away from this program with a strong foundation in dance. The vocabulary of dance will be used in each class, and the students will understand basic concepts and movements of dance as well.

This program will help students develop cognitively, as dance is shown to improve problem solving, explore the ideas of cause and effect, and build new, deeper understanding of previously learned concepts. Each dance class will work on fine and gross motor skills, helping students improve balance and coordination.

This dance program will allow students to release their physical energy and continue their physical development on the days when they are unable to enjoy outside time, as in rainy, too cold, or too hot days. This will to make for a more productive day for other classroom explorations.

Dance and movement is proven to be very effective for students with special needs. The program will help students with special needs be expressive and possibly find an outlet for emotions and tension. Inclusion will be factored in to each lesson plan according to the needs of the classroom.

Overall, I hope to improve preschool education by bringing dance to the schools.
